About 5 Mile Mercantile

The Vision

  • Make the home the center of economic activity.
  • Provide functional and essential goods to the local community.
  • Make a humble living doing what we love.

How it began

I, Grant Pemberton, have worked in higher education overseas, aerospace, semiconductors, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV's), and boot manufacturing.  I have worked independently as an educator, for a medium sized family business, for a start-up, for a fortune 100 company...but I had never worked for myself from home.

When I turned 40, I noticed my aspirations and priorities begin to change from...

  •  leadership success and approval from others
  • financial security
  • "doing what needed to be done to provide for my family"...even if that meant being away from them.

to...

  • seeking to be a better husband and father.
  • focusing on eternal matters
  • pursuing a modest living

In 2023, I left my management position and financial stability to work from home creating functional leather goods from my garage.

Why Five Mile Prairie

I had no choice: I married into it.  Jokes aside, I love history--specifically remembering how things were.  When I buy a tool from a yard sale, I hold it, envision the person who used it, look up the history of the company that produced it, and down the rabbit hole I go.  Land and buildings are the same: Who owned it before me?  What were they like?  What was once here?

I have been blessed to have all of my wife's family here on the Prairie, with almost all of them on Prescott Rd.  My wife moved up here in the early '90s with her family when she was in high school.  Her sister's family followed about 20 years ago, and then my family 5 years ago.

The Goal

Convince as many people as I can about the importance of thinking twice before we buy.  Human lives are impacted by our purchasing decisions.
